A good haircut is something so simple yet has the power to instill in us a confidence that we otherwise would struggle to find. On the other hand, a bad haircut has the power to either weaken or destroy our confidence completely. It is amazing how a single haircut can provide two different results. I went to get my hair cut this week and ended up with one of those terrible haircuts that are a person’s worst nightmare. While adjusting to this haircut, I have learned that a haircut is very similar to life as it pertains to one’s outlook.
Despite hating it at first, my terrible haircut has taught me the valuable life lesson of staying in the moment. This is easier said than done when living with anxiety since we always tend to focus on the future, but sometimes the difficult things end up being worth it. It is so easy to focus on the negative things happening around us. We become consumed in negativity, which makes it impossible to recognize any of the positives.
That same morning, a kind person paid for my breakfast. That kind gesture brought me so much happiness and started my day off right. Despite appreciating this person’s act, I zoned in on the negative (the bad haircut) and forgot the positive (the act of kindness). By recognizing this, I realized that negativity does have the power to control us if we let it. Our outlook makes all the difference!
We alone have the power to change our outlook. Altering one’s mindset is not an easy thing to do. It takes time, patience, and dedication. It is something that often requires the help of others, such as a therapist, family member, or friend. With the right support system and therapeutic tools, we can heal.
Healing is a process. It is about becoming stronger, not strong. Strong is an end. Stronger, on the other hand, is a journey. Embrace each step of the journey – both small and large – for you are closer to becoming the person you have always dreamed of being with the passing of each day. You are capable of attaining and worthy of all the happiness that life has to offer. It is all about taking baby steps and living one moment at a time. You’ve got this! I believe in you!
