Workshop: Mental Health Disparities in Minority Populations
Issues of mental health do not affect communities equally. Racial, gender and sexual minorities often experience poor mental health outcomes. These groups are less likely to receive mental health services, and those who do are more likely to receive poorer quality care. In order to address mental health disparities, it is important to consider how different types of diversity can impact an individual’s identity and mental health experiences.
Systemic barriers make it difficult for minorities to access quality healthcare. These can include but are not limited to lack of availability of proper services, cultural stigma toward mental health, high costs of health insurance, and discrimination in clinical settings. Many have looked to the development of greater cultural competence as the key toward improving mental health systems. More recently, however, the idea of establishing cultural partnerships has gained traction. This may address a need for creating more equitable relationships between service providers and individuals and more effective mental health structures. Learn about the systemic barriers that lead to mental health disparities in minority communities.
